What is a UDID?

Each iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch has a Unique Device Identifier (UDID), which is a sequence of 40 letters and numbers that is specific to your device. It's like a serial number and it will look something like this: 54f7210bef20ffb4fbef85364efef24547b6e7f0.

Apps that have not been approved for sale in the iTunes store (Beta Apps) can only be ran on a device that has been "provisioned". The process of provisioning is unique to each individual device. For instance, if you have two iPhones or an iPhone and an iPad each of the devices will have to have their own unique provisioning profile to run the Beta software.

There are alternatives to provisioning your Apple device, see the section below titled "Is there an easier way?".

Here are the steps necessary to provide the UDID to Brainflo.com to get a provisioning profile.

Finding Your Unique Identifier (UDID). Easy!

The easy way: There is a great free App, Ad Hoc Helper, that you can install on your Apple device. This App will send an email with the UDID and you can download the App here.

Once you have downloaded and installed this App, send the email to your project manager at Brainflo.com.

We will create a provisioning profile and send you a copy of the App in Beta and the provisioning profile.

Next step, Install the App and provisioning profile - see "Install App & provisioning Profile" below.

Finding Your Unique Identifier (UDID) with iTunes.

This process, while more difficult than using the Ad Hoc Helper App, involves several steps, but is also fairly easy to accomplish.

To set started, plug your Apple device into iTunes and let it sync.

When the sync is finished finished, click on your Apple device in the left panel. It should look something like below. In the upper middle of the screen find where it says "Serial Number".

Click on the word "Serial Number" and it will change to "Identifier (UDID):"

Select Copy from the Edit menu. This will store the UDID so that it can be pasted into an email.

Open an email and paste the UDID number and send to your project manager at Brainflo.com.

How do I install the App and Provisioning Profile?

To install the App and Provisioning Profile on your Apple Device, attach the device and let it sync to iTunes.

Select the "Apps" on the left side of iTunes. You should see all of the available Apps for your phone on the right.

You will have received a zip file via email from your Brainflo.com project manager. Unzip this file and you will have two files, the App and a provisioning profile. Select both of these files and drag and drop them into your iTunes in the middle of your Apps.

Sync with iTunes one last time and you should now be able to use the Beta version of the App.

Is there an easier way?

Yes and no. This is the only process to actualy get the Beta version of your app on your Apple device. But, we can schedule an online meeting and run your App in a simulator. This will allow you to see your App in "action" and we can work through the details of the final design. To arrange this Beta demonstration, talk to your project manager.
